NAU Global Citizens Project Scholars

This month, Colli a Volturno also becomes a classroom without walls.

We welcome a cohort of students from Northern Arizona University’s Honors College as part of the Global Citizens Project Scholars program, an immersive faculty-led experience designed to connect academic learning with lived global engagement. Over seven nights, students will move from the vibrant intensity of Naples to the slower rhythms of Colli a Volturno, where relationship-centered learning takes root through shared meals, school partnerships, environmental exploration, and everyday community life. The program concludes with a day in the Eternal City of Rome.

Program

Students will spend time in Colli collaborating with local schoolchildren through sports, music, bread-making, and creative exchange. They will meet the remarkable Uncinettine, whose crocheting traditions carry generations of artistry and local memory, and create alongside them. They will step into the landscapes of the central Apennines with the team at Rewilding Apennines, exploring conservation efforts tied to the Marsican brown bear and the broader ecological story of this region. They will sit with local citizens over cards, conversation, and folklore, discovering that some of the richest intercultural learning happens in the unscripted spaces between formal activities.

Partners

This experience is made possible through extraordinary local partnerships: Pierdomenico Amodei and the team at TrippinMolise, whose regional expertise and commitment to authentic Molise experiences help bring these programs to life; Andrea Rossi, our on-site support coordinator who ensures smooth logistics and develops a personal connection with each student; and Dr. Jess Strom, now in her third year leading this program and a model of  Intercultural Citizenship anchored in historical expertise.

Colli a Volturno may look like a postcard village perched quietly above the valley, but contemporary global learning is alive here. Through intentional partnerships and reciprocal design, places like Colli become sites of exchange, reflection, and lived global citizenship.
