A Conversation with Annunziata Lanni

Each month we will share perspectives on Molise from those who live it and love it, and our interviews will often be a chance for language practice. This month we chatted with our good friend and partner, Annunziata Lanni.

Nunzia, our Italy Coordinator, is a passionate travel designer and licensed tour leader. She has successfully completed her studies in Chinese Language (BA) and Tourism Management (MA), and she currently works as  Key Account Manager for PHShop in Naples. Her desire to explore the world has inspired her to travel and work in numerous multicultural environments, however Molise is what she calls home.

Molise IS; what IS Molise to you?

To me, Molise represents home. It is the place where my roots lie—a land of landscapes I know almost by heart, of people who still greet one another on the street, and of a pace of life that stays with me even when I am far away.

It is a small region, but that very compactness allows it to preserve a sense of authenticity. For me, Molise is above all a sense of belonging—something I carry with me wherever I go.

What is your favorite thing about Molise?

What I love most is the sheer variety packed into such a small area. In a short time, you can go from the mountains to the sea, passing through villages, forests, and countryside, and encounter completely different worlds.

But even more than the landscapes, I love the connection people here have with the land: the food, the traditions, the village festivals, and the way people remain deeply tied to these places and their own roots.

And then there is something I appreciate more and more, especially after traveling extensively: the chance to slow down.

What is a challenge facing Molise?

I believe one of the biggest challenges is managing to retain and attract young people.

Molise has so many assets, yet those born here often feel they must leave to study, work, or build a future. In my view, the real challenge isn’t just raising awareness about Molise, but creating the conditions where people can choose to stay, return, or start over here.

I would love for leaving to be a choice rather than a necessity, and for those who do leave to feel they always have a place to come back to.

Tell readers about your specific context/life in Molise.

My life in Molise is defined, above all, by my roots.

I grew up in Venafro, at the foot of the Mainarde mountains, with the mountains just a stone’s throw away and living in a community where people, places, and traditions are part of everyday life.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to travel extensively and live far from Molise. Perhaps that is precisely what has allowed me to appreciate it even more. Every time I return, I rediscover something that is a part of me: the tranquility, the nature, the human connections, and that sense of familiarity that is harder to find elsewhere.

For me, Molise isn’t necessarily a place where you have to stay your whole life. It is a place to set out from, knowing you always have roots to return to.

What would you say is the key issue facing your hometown of Venafro right now?

For me, one of the main issues for Venafro is finding a way to leverage its potential without losing its identity.

It is a city with a significant history, a rich cultural and archaeological heritage, and a location that could make it a focal point for the region. However, I believe there is still much to be done to raise awareness of these resources and encourage people—including the locals themselves—to experience them more fully.

Then there is the issue of young people. At a certain point, many feel the need to leave to study, work, or gain new experiences. The challenge, in my view, is ensuring that leaving doesn’t necessarily mean never coming back.

Creating opportunities and making the area more vibrant and attractive could allow those who leave to find a reason to return one day.

What is your top recommendation to visit in Molise?

I would say the Mainarde mountains and all the small villages surrounding them, extending as far as Lake Castel San Vincenzo.

For me, this area perfectly embodies the Molise I love: mountains, forests, small villages, water, and a landscape that remains truly authentic. Lake Castel San Vincenzo, set against the backdrop of the Mainarde mountains, is one of those places where you don’t need to build much to create something special—you simply have to stop and look around.

I would recommend not limiting yourself to the lake, but rather traveling the roads that wind through the villages and the surrounding countryside, taking your time to stop along the way. That is precisely where, in my view, you discover the truest side of Molise: a place defined by nature, silence, small villages, and ever-changing landscapes.

Is there one piece of advice Molise has taught you or embodied for you?

It taught me the value of small things.

Living in a small region might seem like a limitation—especially when you’re young—but as I’ve grown older, I’ve realized it can also be a source of richness. Molise taught me that things don’t have to be big, fast-paced, or crowded to hold value.

And perhaps that is precisely why, whenever I travel and discover new places, a part of me always keeps coming back here.
