Each month we will share perspectives on Molise from those who live it and love it, and our interviews will often be a chance for language practice. This month we chatted with our good friend and partner, Paolo Pasquale.
Paolo is a civil engineer, freelance journalist, and travel designer, as well as an amateur astronomer specializing in astrotourism. He lives in Campobasso, and he is dedicated to promoting his region through Turismo in Molise.
Il Molise esiste; cosa rappresenta per te la regione Molise?
Il Molise per me rappresenta non solo le mie origini e la mia storia, ma anche la scoperta di me stesso. Quando ho iniziato ad andare in giro per la regione per fare foto l’ho fatto quasi per scherzo, per perdere un po’ di tempo. Da subito però mi sono reso conto che se volevo cogliere l’essenza di questa terra dovevo farlo con calma, con organizzazione, con attenzione. A tal punto da dover dimenticare i problemi del lavoro e i pensieri della vita quotidiana per concentrarmi su cosa stavo fotografando e studiando.
Molise IS; what IS Molise to you?
For me, Molise represents not only my roots and my history, but also the discovery of myself. When I started traveling around the region to take photos, I did it almost as a joke, just to pass some time. Right away, though, I realized that if I wanted to capture the essence of this land, I had to do it calmly, methodically, and with care—to the point where I had to set aside my work problems and the worries of daily life to focus on what I was photographing and studying.
Qual è l’aspetto che preferisci del Molise?
Il Molise è una regione piccola, anche se con ampi spazi naturali dove spesso poter stare da soli. Uno degli aspetti che preferisco è quello di potersi perdere, senza mai aver paura di non ritrovare la strada. Proprio grazie alla sua scarsa estensione ci si può lasciar andare e godere dei paesaggi sapendo che c’è sempre una strada ad attenderci o qualcuno ben disposto ad aiutarci.
What is your favorite thing about Molise?
Molise is a small region, though it boasts vast natural spaces where you can often be alone. One of the things I love most is being able to get lost without ever worrying about not finding my way back. Precisely because it’s so small, you can let yourself go and enjoy the scenery, knowing that there’s always a road waiting for you or someone willing to help.
Qual è una delle sfide che il Molise deve affrontare?
Certamente quella dello spopolamento causata in gran parte dalla fuga dei giovani a causa del lavoro. Bisogna capire che facendo rete ci si può non solo sostenere a vicenda, ma si riesce anche a crescere. È finito il tempo delle persone che curano solo il proprio orto, bisogna lavorare insieme, in sinergia, anche tra pubblico e privato. In questo senso il turismo potrebbe essere un settore trainante, ma ci vuole una visione chiara, una direzione precisa e non lavorare anno per anno ma avere una strategia che guardi decenni avanti. Per fare ciò, però, è necessario, finalmente, creare una forte identità territoriale ed è necessario che tutti conoscano e promuovano la propria regione.
What is a challenge facing Molise?
Certainly, the issue of depopulation, caused largely by young people leaving in search of work. We need to understand that by building networks, we can not only support one another but also grow. The days of people tending only to their own backyard are over; we need to work together, in synergy, including between the public and private sectors. In this sense, tourism could be a driving force, but it requires a clear vision and a precise direction—not just working year by year, but having a strategy that looks decades ahead. To do this, however, we must finally create a strong regional identity, and everyone must get to know and promote their own region.
Racconta ai lettori la tua realtà o la tua vita in Molise.
La mia vita è molto semplice, si divide tra il lavoro da ingegnere edile e quello di esperto in turismo. Negli anni passati andavo molto in giro a studiare, fotografare o parlare con persone per apprendere il più possibile. Adesso il lavoro è prettamente di promozione della mia terra attraverso il web, la creazione di itinerari o attività sul campo tra eventi ed incontri. Non mancano però uscite con amici a vivere luoghi, piatti e tradizioni della regione.
Tell readers about your specific context/life in Molise.
My life is very simple; it’s divided between my work as a civil engineer and as a tourism expert. In the past, I used to travel a lot to study, take photos, or talk to people in order to learn as much as possible. Now my work mainly involves promoting my region online, creating itineraries, and organizing on-site activities such as events and gatherings. However, I still make time to go out with friends to experience the region’s places, cuisine, and traditions.
Qual è, secondo te, la questione principale che la tua città, Campobasso, sta affrontando in questo momento?
Come per il Molise anche Campobasso sta vivendo un forte spopolamento. Le attività chiudono, i ragazzi vanno via e così facendo non c’è uno scambio di idee o una crescita personale o economica della città. Nonostante sia capoluogo di regione sta perdendo il carattere di città “centrale” e credo se non fosse per gli uffici ancora presenti, sarebbe diventata già molto meno importante anche a livello regionale.
What would you say is the key issue facing your hometown of Campobasso right now?
Like Molise, Campobasso is also experiencing significant depopulation. Businesses are closing, young people are leaving, and as a result, there is no exchange of ideas or personal or economic growth in the city. Although it is the regional capital, it is losing its status as a “central” city, and I believe that if it weren’t for the offices still located there, it would have already become much less important even at the regional level.
Qual è il luogo che consigli assolutamente di visitare in Molise?
Da campobassano amante della sua città non posso non consigliare una visita del nostro centro storico, ma ci sono diversi luoghi a cui sono legato e che credo meritino di essere visitati. Frosolone, tra lame e montagne, Pesche per la conformazione caratteristica e il panorama, Termoli per il mare ma anche Bagnoli del Trigno. Per gli amanti della storia invece direi Pietrabbondante e Sepino senza dimenticare Venafro, Larino e Isernia. E senza tralasciare il verde delle nostre montagne nel quale sono immersi gran parte dei paesi.
What is your top recommendation to visit in Molise?
As a native of Campobasso who loves my city, I can’t help but recommend a visit to our historic center, but there are several places I’m particularly fond of that I think are worth visiting. Frosolone, nestled between the river valleys and the mountains; Pesche, for its distinctive layout and panoramic views; Termoli for the sea; and Bagnoli del Trigno as well. For history buffs, I’d suggest Pietrabbondante and Sepino, not to mention Venafro, Larino, and Isernia. And let’s not forget the lush greenery of our mountains, which surround most of these towns.
C’è un insegnamento particolare che il Molise ti ha trasmesso o che incarna per te?
Ce n’è uno fondamentale che ho capito veramente solo quando ho iniziato il mio viaggio in Molise. Ovvero quello di essere curiosi anche delle piccole cose, di non dare nulla per scontato. Anche a pochi passi da casa possono nascondersi tesori inestimabili di arte, storia e bellezza che meritano di essere conosciuti e valorizzati. Spesso non servono vacanze costose in posti esotici. A volte per rilassarsi e restare incantati basta scoprire e guardare con attenzione e occhi curiosi anche i luoghi che abbiamo tutti intorno a noi.
Is there one piece of advice Molise has taught you or embodied for you?
There’s one fundamental lesson I truly understood only when I began my journey through Molise: to be curious even about the little things, and not to take anything for granted. Even just a few steps from home, priceless treasures of art, history, and beauty may be hidden—treasures that deserve to be discovered and appreciated. Often, you don’t need expensive vacations in exotic places. Sometimes, to relax and be enchanted, all it takes is to discover and observe—with careful, curious eyes—even the places right around us.
