Cantine Di...Vine: Autumn in the Cellars of Guardiaregia
As autumn settles over the Matese, the small village of Guardiaregia opens its doors for a celebration built around some of the simplest pleasures of the season: good food, local wine, music, and gathering together. Cantine Di…Vine, held this year from October 23–25, transforms the historic center into an enogastronomic journey through the flavors and traditions of Molise.
Meagan and I had the chance to experience Cantine Di…Vine ourselves a few years ago, and we still remember the smell of porchetta roasting and being sliced right in front of us; the taste of the new wine as we sat on a hay bale under the stars; and the sounds of community as we wandered Guardiaregia. We even stumbled into an artist’s workshop as she worked, and her design still lives in our kitchen on a magnet, reminding us daily of the feeling of home so common in Molise.

From Cellar to Cellar
Historic cellars and old homes throughout the village, normally closed to the public, are opened and transformed into places to eat, drink, and gather. Rather than experiencing the festival from a single piazza or row of food stands, visitors make their way through Guardiaregia’s narrow streets and alleys, moving from one cellar to another and discovering the village along the way.
Inside, the focus is unmistakably Molisan. Traditional dishes and local products are paired with wines, offering a taste of the foods and flavors connected to the surrounding territory. Outside, popular music and entertainment follow visitors through the streets, turning the route between cellars into part of the celebration itself.
Over the years, Cantine Di…Vine has grown into a much-anticipated autumn tradition, but its setting keeps the experience closely tied to Guardiaregia. Perched at the foot of the Matese and surrounded by the natural landscape of the WWF Oasis of Guardiaregia-Campochiaro, the village provides a fitting backdrop for a festival centered on seasonality, place, and the fruits of the land.

When the Cellar Becomes a Canvas
More recently, the celebration has also become a canvas for another kind of storytelling. In 2024, the Cantine Dipinte project invited five artists to paint old wooden cellar doors throughout Guardiaregia with works inspired by local identity. Their subjects included the traditional pacchiana dress, San Nicola, brigandage, the village’s history of pottery making, migration, and the ancient varieties of apples found in Molise. The doors remain another way of encountering the stories of the community while walking through the village.

A Village Meant to Be Wandered
Perhaps that is what makes Cantine Di…Vine particularly suited to Guardiaregia. The festival does not simply bring food and wine into the village; it invites visitors into spaces that belong to its everyday history. Cellars become gathering places. Old doors tell new stories. Streets become dining rooms. And traditions that might otherwise remain tucked behind stone walls are brought into the open and shared.
For three days in October, experiencing Guardiaregia means moving slowly through it—following the music, stepping through an open doorway, tasting something made nearby, raising a glass, and seeing where the next alley leads.
